Psychology Associate

Dr. Valarie Turner has varied experiences providing individual and group psychotherapy, psychological evaluations and assessments, and consultation. She has provided comprehensive educational and mental health services including academic, vocational, and individual and group psychotherapy with adults across diverse cultural demographics. She has worked in a variety of mental health facilities including community mental health, university counseling service, forensic and private practice settings. She is passionate about supporting individuals to maximize their strengths to enhance their lives and life’s goals.

EDUCATION:  Howard University, B.S. in Psychology, minor in Sociology; Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counseling Psychology, and she earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counseling Psychology (APA Accredited). She is trained in small and large group experiences.

INTERNSHIP:  Pre-Doctoral internship completed at St. Elizabeths Hospital, Washington, DC, APA Accredited. She was responsible for individual and group psychotherapy, psychological evaluations and assessments. In addition, she completed training in Forensic assessment and evaluation at John Howard Pavilion, with focus on competency evaluations.

POST-DOCTORAL TRAINING:  Dr. Turner has provided home-based therapy and evaluations for at-risk adolescents and their families for a private practice. In addition to, clinical services in a community mental health facility for adults and geriatric populations with focus on serious mental illnesses, mood disorders, personality disorders, and life changes and transition issues.
She has also provided counseling services in a higher education setting to individuals with mental health issues; in addition to, providing community residential support, community outreach, crisis intervention and consultation. She has supervised undergraduate and graduate students in case conceptualization and client treatment.

CREDENTIALS:  Registered Psychology Associate in the State of Maryland; Resident in Psychology in the State of Virginia.

MEMBERSHIPS:  American Psychological Association (APA)

SERVICES PROVIDED:  Dr. Turner provides individual therapy with late adolescents and adults.
